A new Islamic University College of Education in Tamale was on Friday, September 20, commissioned by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
The project funded by the Suhaibaani family in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia comprises Dormitories for Boys and Girls, Four (4) Masters Bungalows, Three (3) Residential apartments for Imam, Muazzin, Security and a Guest House, Eight (8) units of 400 Meters square Classroom blocks, An Administration Block, Dining/Assembly Hall , an ICT Center, Physics and Chemistry Laboratory, and about 1,500 congregation capacity mosque among others.
In his address during the commissioning of the University College, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who described the project as a national treasure expressed the appreciation of the government of Ghana to the donors of the project, the Family of Late Al-Sheikh Abdul Rahaman Al-Suahibaani for their benevolence in the education sector. Adding it will lessen the burden on Universities when the beneficiaries of the government flagship program Free Senior High School (SHS) seek admissions for tertiary education.
The Vice President implored the managers of the institution to ensure that it becomes a model university college not only for Muslim students but all Ghanaians who intend to become medical doctors, scientists and technocrats in future to study to contribute to the transformation of Ghana.
“We implemented the Free SHS in 2017 and from this September, all the streams, i.e. SHS 1, 2 and 3 will all benefit from the Free SHS. In all, 1.2million children will be enrolled in high schools in Ghana, making it the largest number of students so far enrolled in Ghana’s education” Dr. Bawumia stated.
Doctuur Mohammed Ibrahim on behalf of the managers of the facility expressed gratitude to the Vice President for his presence and support to cause of Islam and however appealed to government to consider the training of more Muslim doctors, Scientists and Technocrats to augment the high demand for these professionals in the job market in Ghana.
He revealed the school will be fully furnished by the end of this Academic year to begin enrolment at the beginning of the next Academic year. “We shall work in close collaboration with the Directorate of the Ghana Education Service to ensure that this facility is put to proper use to produce the requisite caliber of professionals to develop the northern region” Doctuur Mohammed assured.
The Islamic University College of Education will be affiliated to the University for Development Studies and the University of Education Winneba to offer science and educational courses.
