Ghana private transport operators strike over fuel costs

A nationwide strike against rising fuel prices in Ghana has been launched by some transport operators in the West African country.

A group known as the Coalition of Private Transport Operators is leading the campaign to compel the government to reduce fuel prices.

Concerns

The group said in a statement that the government has refused to heed their concerns after three consecutive meetings.

According to the leadership of the coalition, the decision holds until government does the needful.

A representative of the coalition of private transport operators, Abass Imoro said told Joy FM that “apart from coming out with the deduction we are asking from which we know is possible, there is nothing to change our mind.”

They have thus directed all their members to ground their vehicles and bikes until further notice.

Commercial activity across the country’s two major cities – Accra and Kumasi – could be brought to a halt following this directive.

Protest barbaric

But some driver unions are kicking against the move.

The Alliance Drivers of Ghana in a press statement describe the action as “illicit and unlawful for any union, group of drivers or any individual to deprive his fellow of freedom of movement”.

“If any driver or transport operator has decided not to work to demonstrate his or her protest that’s a personal decision. Any union behind this barbaric act does not have any legal capacity to do so hence all drivers must resist any attempt by any persona to deprive them of their freedom of movement”, they further stated.

They further warned their colleagues to “to abide by the rule of law and desist from any unlawful act”.
