The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party has implored earnestly to the Regent of Dagbon Kampakuya-Naa Andani Yakubu Abbdulai and the Andani family to bury their differences with the party and help it capture power in the upcoming 2016 elections.
Nana Akufo-Addo was speaking at Yendi in an historic visit to the Gbewaa Palace in a bid to re-establish cordial relationship with the Andani residents in Yendi after the murder of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya- Naa Yakubu Andani II.
Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II with some 40 sub-chiefs were reportedly killed in a chieftaincy uprising in May 2002 between the Andani and the Abubu gates in Dagbon over who has the right to occupy the Gbewaa Palace.
The Andani family has since maintained that the assassination which happened during the NPP regime was orchestrated and carried out with a massive support from the party. The family subsequently cut ties with the party and also banned its activities at the Gbewaa Palace.
However, after several closed door meetings and wide consultations, Nana Addo on Monday, August 8, 2016 made an earthshaking visit to the Gbewaa Palace.
Nana Addo at the Palace pleaded with the Regent to assist the party’s efforts to close the longstanding rift between the NPP and the Andani faction.
“I used to come here and warmly received by your father. Unfortunately, there seem to develop some kind of gap between my party, myself and him and the people of Yendi. The time [has] come to close that gap in the interest of all of us and the interest of development of our country,” Nana Addo pleaded.
Nana Akufo-Addo admonished the Regent to ignore falsehoods peddled against him by his political opponents, assuring the Gbewaa Palace that he has no interest in the chieftaincy affairs of Dagbon.
“Some of my political opponents have been going around Dagbon to say that when by the grace of God I come, I am going to be destooling chiefs; 31 chiefs [among others]. I am not involved in traditional matters of Dagbon. Chieftaincy is not my business, my business is Ghana and ruling Ghana and making sure that Ghana moves forward.
“In the affairs of my own palace, the Akyim palace in Kyebi I’m not involved, how do I come here in Dagbon and get myself in the affairs of the Dagbon affairs?” Nana wondered.
Nana Addo appealed to the people of Yendi to have confidence in him and reiterated his promise of ‘one district one factor’ to ensure expansion of jobs for the youth.
“The region, the Andani people, the people of Dagbon have nothing to fear about Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo”.
The flagbearer was in the Northern region with his running mate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, a former minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the NPP national women’s organizer, Otiko Afisa Djabah, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, a former Northern Regional Minister, Prince Imoro Andani, the NPP national Nasara coordinator, Kamaldeen Abdulai, Nana Addo’s spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid, campaign Aide, Iddrisu Musah Superior and all regional executives led by Bugri Naabu, Northern regional chairman of the party.
